MANAGEMENT’S DESPERATE ATTEMPTS TO PROVOKE

Staff meetings have been/are being arranged by the management at various centres. These meetings, called during office hours and termed as official duties, are being used as a platform to openly attack trade unions and the leaders. The sole purpose is to create a provocative situation so that the unions and / or leaders take some steps which may provide a handle to the management to divert the attention of the staff and also to involve the leaders in some victimization actions.

The language used in these meetings is such that even two dearest friends would not feel comfortable to talk in that language. The leaders are being called with abuses such as ‘Stupid fellows’, ‘Cowards’, ‘ bunch of bums’, ‘Goons’, ‘cheats’, ‘swines’ and what not. Could you ever imagine such language being used by the management in the staff meetings and still expect the co-operation from the staff? The leaders are being challenged to come to the dais and speak. The leaders have avoided so far to fall prey to the management’s plans of provocation. Not that the leaders are afraid of addressing from the dais or kept mum inspite of such accusations out of any fear or weakness, but they have maintained restraint in all such meetings out of respect for the Chair and to avoid getting provoked. The UFCBU decided not to get provoked to such tantrums and plans because such method is being followed by the management out of sheer desperation. The management is very much worried of the massive support and participation of the employees and officers in the meetings being held under the banner of UFCBU in different parts of the country. The respect shown by the union leaders is being projected by the management as weakness.

UFCBU is very clear in its objectives and would not like to divert its attention from the main issues on which the agitation has been forced upon us. The unparliamentary language used and challenges thrown by the management in staff meetings are a part of strategy of the management. However, in the process the staff members have understood the management better. When unions were informing about such language or behavior of the management, the staff members were not prepared to believe that any management can use such accusations also! Staff members were hearing about such language being used against the various levels of executives but now they have witnessed themselves in staff meetings.

In case the management so desires, let them arrange a joint meeting to be addressed by the management and UFCBU leaders. Let all issues be discussed. Let such meetings be held without threats, intimidation or use of administrative authority. However, the UFCBU leaders have decided not to fall to the levels of the management because use of derogatory language against the elected leaders has belittled the management in the eyes of the staff members. The staff expects some standard of language from the management personnel according to their positions in the bank. According to UFCBU if some one talks in a language lower then the expected level of the position, it does not affect the people against whom such language is being used instead it lowers the stature of the speaker in the eyes of the staff attending such meetings. Other than the strategy, what is the provocation for the management to use such unparliamentary language? Does the staff aggrieved of the management’s attitude, approach, unilateralism, attack on trade union rights and victimizations and vindictive actions have no right to protest also?

If the management decisions are very much in the interest of the staff and the bank, why the management is so much perturbed? Why they want to curb the legitimate agitation? Why they are using the staff meetings for extending justifications for the unilateral actions and the attacks on union rights? Why there is a need to extend threats, intimidations and forcing the staff to attend the meetings called even during office hours? Why the participation of the staff in UFCBU meetings is unprecedented at all centres? UFCBU is very clear that the management is trying to convert the agitation to a personal fight so as to have the sympathy of the staff and to create a divide between the staff and the unions and the leaders. These are the unions of the staff themselves and the leaders are their elected representatives. That is why the management has not succeeded in creating this divide nor able to convince the staff that it is a fight between individuals.

The actions of the management and its attitude and approach towards the staff, unions and leaders are crystal clear. The intolerance and the perturbedness of the management is so much that it has started victimizations of staff for participation in union meetings or demonstrations or agitations or those who are not able to attend the meetings of the management.

Comrades this is not a fight by the leaders or for the leaders but this is a fight against the attitude and approach of the management. This is a fight for you and by you. Your participation, involvement and commitment are commendable. Maintain your conviction and confidence. It is your struggle and shall be fought until your grievances are resolved.

MEETINGS ON 18th and 19th JANUARY 2007

The management called the UFCBU for discussions on 18.01.2007 to complete the formality. In this meeting, only the unions presented their case and the management did not come forward with any intention to resolve the issues raised by the UFCBU. Instead the management conveyed threats of actions. This itself exposes the intentions of the management.

The Conciliation Proceedings were held on 19.01.2007 afternoon at Dy CLC (Central) Office, Mumbai. In this meeting also, the management did not come forward to bring a resolution to the issues of the UFCBU.

Comrades, there is a great enthusiasm in the employees and officers. This is evident from their participation and involvement in the meetings, deputations and demonstrations throughout the country. The main agitation is starting from the strike of 22nd January 2007.
